THE LEARNING RESOURCE DEPARTMENT

The Learning Resources Department was created from a merger of the ICT Support, Library and Media Resources Departments. The aim was to streamline the delivery of learning resources to both Staff and Students.

Each site has a Learning Resources Centre. These are the main bases for the department’s delivery of its services and should be the first call for anyone needing the Department’s services and are unsure which member of the team is most suited to deal with a request
.
All of the team are available to give advice and assistance and have a wide variety of resources to use or loan.

USE OF LRC

Booking in advance is required to bring a class into the LRC.
Students work quietly so as not to disturb other students.

Other, unaccompanied, students sent to the LRC during lesson time must have written permission and clear instructions as to what they should be doing!

Notices are sent out to form tutors to remind students about any overdue books and to return them regularly in order not to incur huge fines! Students are not allowed any further borrowing until overdue books are returned.

Students are encouraged to research using books (which have been edited and checked) in preference to immediate recourse to the Internet.
If there are any gaps in topic coverage staff are invited to make suggestions for suitable subject material.

The Enquiry Screen facility (Alice) is available on the College network giving access everything that is catalogued in both LRCs.

PUBLICATIONS & REPROGRAPHICS

College information publications and programmes are desktop published and printed within the department.

Staff can receive advice and assistance to create documents, forms, booklets and PowerPoint publications presentations. The centralised reprographics is used whenever possible and especially for complicated or long print runs
Booklet making can be undertaken by several different processes – saddle stitching, comb binding and thermal binding. Lamination can be carried out in various sizes from credit card to A3, as well as colour photocopying onto transparencies for overhead projection.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT
The department is responsible for allocating, installing maintaining and supporting all college AV, computing and reprographics systems.
