Year 1 AS Examination

Unit 1 - Mass Media (One Data Response Question 1¼ hours)

Content: Relationship between Technology and Media; Mass Media and Ideology; Selection and Presentation of News Media and Magazines; Media and the Representation of Age, Gender, Ethnicity and Class; Ownership and Control of the Media.

Unit 2 – Education (One Data Response Question 1¼ hours)

Content: The Role of Education; Education and Social Class, Gender and Ethnicity; Factors Shaping the Curriculum; The ‘Hidden’ Curriculum; Teacher – Pupil Relationships; Pupil Sub-Cultures; Educational ‘Success’ and ‘Failure’.


Unit 3W - Sociological Methods (One Data Response Question 1 hour)

Content: Methods of Data Collection; Primary and Secondary Evidence; Positivism and Interpretivism; Theoretical, Practical and Ethical Considerations influencing Choice and Method of Research;

The Nature of Social Facts.

Year 2 A2 Examination

Unit 4 - Power and Politics (One short Data Response Question and one Essay 1½ hours)

Content: Power, Authority and Ideology. Nature and Distribution of Power; The Modern State; Ideologies of Political Parties; Changes in Voting Behaviour; The Role of the Mass Media; Political and Revolutionary Movements.

Unit 5C – Coursework

Candidates are required to submit a sociological study before the final written examination. This study is an opportunity for candidates to investigate a subject of sociological interest. The study should not exceed 3500 words in length.


Unit 6 (i) Crime and Deviance (One three-part Synoptic Question 1½ hours)

Unit 6 (ii) Stratification and Differentiation

Unit is divided into two sections; candidates must choose one section and answer the three- part synoptic question.

Content i. Social Order and Control. Deviance, Power and Social Control; Social Distribution of Crime by Age, Gender, Ethnicity and Class; Societal Reaction (Mass media) to Crime; Youth Sub-Cultures and Crime; Suicide.

Content: ii. Different Ways of Measuring Social Class; Different Theories of Stratification; Differences in Life Chances; Changes in the Class Structure; Social Mobility.
