MATHS

KS3

Keystage 3
Maths is one of the core subjects on the National Curriculum. You will be building on the knowledge and skills that you gained in Maths at Key Stage 2. As a City Technology College, Maths is one of the subjects that we particularly emphasise and you can expect to be worked hard in this subject. You will use textbooks and other resources as well and use the computer for particular projects.

Groupings and Assessment
You will normally have four lessons in Maths each week.

In Year 7 you will be taught in sets that are based initially on your KS2 SATs and NFER results. Periodic tests and end of year exams will help us decide which set continues to be the best for you. You will have a formal assessment every term and this will help you to see how you are achieving and help us to see where you need particular help.

At the end of Year 9 are the SATs exams, which will test your Maths and give you a new national level that you have reached. This will help us to decide which level at GCSE in Year 10 and 11 it is best to aim for. The most able will be able to take an extra GCSE in Statistics in Year 10, together with some work for AS Maths. These are things it is worth knowing now so that you can work as hard as possible in Maths in KS3 to achieve the best possible results at KS4.

You will be given homework twice a week. Extra Maths help can be obtained during some lunchtimes and during College Enrichment sessions. Homework is extremely important and there is never an excuse for not being able to get extra help if you want it.

From time to time the College will enter national competitions in Maths which could earn you a certificate if you are good enough to be entered. We also have a strong link with the Royal Institution and are involved with the running of Master Classes for the most able Mathematicians in the local area. It is likely that our College will continue to feature as a centre for this in the future.
