Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College
Open Day, 25 September 2008

Principal’s talk.

Mr Jones welcomed all visitors and introduced the Federation registrar, Ms Oliver and the Head of Lower School, Mr Charlton.

“Children & parents now have a very important decision to make: Which school would you like to attend for the next 7 years? Today I hope you make that decision with us.

“[Hatcham]… provides you with a first class education that is helping all of you to make outstanding progress.  This is a remarkable achievement because nationally, your school is consistently bucking the trend in helping all groups achieve above expectation…  Discussions with you and your parents clearly confirmed that good old fashioned values of ‘discipline’, ‘hard work’ and high expectations and challenge’ have provided you with excellent opportunities to develop your skills and place you in good stead”.

Carmen Rodney, Her Majesty’s Inspector

While you are here, you will be able to tour the Jerningham Site – there are two others, the Pepys site and the Sports Field in Nunhead – see our facilities, get a feel for the ethos and atmosphere of the college, meets some staff and students and ask questions.

The college is fully staffed by specialist teachers. There are over 1380 students receiving a single sex education from the age of 11 -16, and co-educational for 16 – 18 year olds. We offer a broad curriculum with specialism in music. However, you do not have to be musical to come here. We are multi cultural, Christian federation which emphasises the importance of equal opportunities, tolerance and respect.

Last year again the college achieved excellent results in public examinations, showing sustained strength year on year. This is a result of our expertise and experience. This is shown at GCSE, A Level with 90% of our leavers going on to the top universities – 5 into Oxford and Cambridge. A copy of the Examination results booklet can be obtained from the Principal’s PA, Mrs Anne Bourke.

We offer a varied enrichment program, including a thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award program, a strong house system, leadership programmes and a wide variety of school trips.
We are proud of our sporting achievements which are many including: an Olympian, as well as England and Premiership footballers are among our alumni.

Music, which is a specialism at Aske’s, is very strong at the college. We have had students performing at the Royal Opera House and on a hit single. We regularly have students performing with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and one student last year gained a choral scholarship to Oxford.

There is a strict uniform code in the college. Holidays will not be permitted in term time.
At Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College, you will make friends for life. You will join an exclusive club. Once an Askean, always an Askean.  This is a unique college sponsored by the Haberdasher’s Company, who give us advice and support through governance, bursaries and opportunities.

We have many links with the local community, as well as nationally and internationally. We are building links with China and we have two teachers of Mandarin with our federation. We work with primary schools and have partnerships with organisations such as The Costain Group, Greenhouse Schools, World Challenge and the Royal Institution.

Parents of students in the college are very supportive. The Friends of Aske’s College society is thriving and I keep in touch with all parents via a newsletter sent out 3 times each year.

The college is very popular. We are the lead school in the federation of Academies, working in partnership with our sister school, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy which opened in September 2005. There are now two Haberdasher schools in this area of South London education over 2000 local youngsters. These are separate academies with one vision – to increase the availability of an Aske’s education to more students and to raise each child’s level of achievement.

We are very proud of or students. They are a credit to us and to themselves and their families. We promote excellence, mutual respect and responsible behaviour.

If you would like to become an Askean, the procedure is in our prospectus or on our website.

Please contact the college if you have any further questions.

Thank you for your interest in the college.

Mr Declan Jones
Principal.
