Address to Prospective Parents considering admission to the College for September 2008

Welcome to you from all the students and staff at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College. I am Michele Adamson, the Principal of the College which became an Academy in September 2005.

We have an exciting future ahead of us. I look forward with anticipation and a sense of discovery as we continue to build on the firm foundations that are so established at Hatcham.

In 2004 the Federation of Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College and Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy was set up by the Haberdashers' Company in order to increase the availability of an Aske's education to more students and make a wider use of the strengths that Aske's has to offer.

The Aske's Vision is one where all students in the Federation are inspired to reach their full potential, regardless of ability or background, where aspirations and achievements are constantly raised through the highest quality academic, personal and vocational teaching and guidance, and where the students and staff at the two academies benefit from each other's strengths.

Hatcham is the lead school in the Federation and we are committed to working closely with Knights Academy to raise standards at all levels.

We are proud of our history as a Haberdashers' School, which goes back 300 years, and has always stood for excellence and quality in education. Our ethos is one of MUTUAL RESPECT and RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR.

High standards of uniform are always expected and required.

Academic results are well above the local and national averages with 2007 results at: GCSE 92% gaining 5+ A*-C and at A Level an average of 299 points gained per candidate.

A full listing of results can be obtained from my PA, Mrs A Bourke, at the Pepys Site office.

All information regarding admissions can be obtained from the Federation Registrar: Mrs S Oliver - Tel. No. 020 7652 9500.

As an Academy Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College is still an independant state school. No fees are required. We offer the full national curriculum with a specialism in Music and are strong in Arts and Humanities, as proven by our Gold Arts Mark Award. Science, Mathematics and Technology continue to be major strengths at the College.

  • Students and staff work hard: the day starts at 8.30 a.m. promptly. Breakfast is served from 7.45 a.m.
  • All students and staff are involved in extra-curricular activities called Enrichment. These are an integral part of our curriculum and take place weekly. There are also many other clubs, teams, activities, visits and journeys on offer for our students to choose from.
  • Holidays are NOT permitted in term time.
  • We expect all students to stay on in education to the age of 18 and we hope they will stay with the college provided we have an appropriate course on offer. The majority of our students stay on in the Sixth Form and almost all stay in full-time education. We also admit new recruits at the age of 16. Sixth Formers go on to Higher and Further Education to a full range of Colleges and Universities. We have a number of students admitted to Oxbridge each year and also into American Universities like Harvard.

Our intake is fully comprehensive and we are oversubscribed in all nine of our ability bands. We operate Fair Banding as required by the Admissions Code of Practice.

The Catchment Area is three miles (4.8kms) and south of the Thames. The radial distance is measured as a direct line from the College's main building entrance on the Pepys site. Home to College distance will be measured as the direct line distance between the applicant's home to the College's main building entrance on the Pepys site.

Facilities

The College boasts an IT network that is second to none. It operates across two sites with a Home/School link. There is one workstation to every three students. All students have access to the Internet and their own e-mail address. Science and Technology are similarly well resourced. We have a rolling programme of upgrading the learning environment and respect for property by staff and students is a high priority.

An exciting new high tech teaching building, the Davidson building, was made available to students in the of Spring 2007. This provides new facilities for the Sixth Form, for Media Studies and for Drama.

Aims of the College

Wherever possible:

  • To provide single-sex education for students up to the age of 16 and co-education in the sixth form

  • To ensure that all students receive a broad, balanced and high quality education including extra activities in an extended day
