We are a consortium of three very experienced schools with outstanding reputations in teacher education.  We are also three schools which have been specialist Training Schools and have been given an overall grading of ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. The three schools are Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College (http://www.haaf.org.uk) in Lewisham, Langley Park School for Boys (https://www.lpbs.org.uk)in Bromley and Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls (http://www.nmbec.org.uk) in Croydon.

Non-salaried/PGCE route

We have vacancies for trainee teachers in English, History and Art – 3 places for each, Training Route only (ie, not salaried). Successful applicants will be working in a partnership of the three schools and the Institute of Education, the programme of study will largely follow the institute’s Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course with enhancement at the beginning and the end. Students who complete the course successfully will receive both a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

In the first instance, please register with the Teaching Agency and complete the online application. The interview process will take place in one of the three schools and the consortium will be responsible for allocating places.  These may well go quickly so early application is recommended.

Please note that although we did have four places for the new School Direct (salaried) route into teaching – in Art & Design, Design & Technology, Modern Foreign Languages and Physical Education all four places have not been taken.

Hatcham Temple Grove Free School

In July 2012 the Department for Education (DfE) approved the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation’s application to open the Hatcham Temple Grove (HTG) Free School. The Department for Education are of the opinion that it is not feasible to have the school on a split site and that it should be accommodated on the Pepys Road site in a brand new purpose built building.  Based on this information we have now amended our proposed admission distance criteria which will now only be measured from the Pepys Road site and not the dual node as originally proposed in our application.

Students joining Knights Academy become part of a Federation Sixth Form. Lessons and other activities will take place on the Knights Academy campus, however as part of the Federation our students are welcomed and encouraged to use the facilities and make the most of the opportunities provided by being a part of our Federation.

Knights Academy provides a wide-ranging and high quality curriculum that is suited to the needs of our school.  We offer both ‘A’ Level and BTEC courses at Level 3 and there are opportunities for students to participate in our renowned facilities for sport, but also music, cultural, community, employment and other activities.  We hope that Knights Academy students will honour all their commitments to all events and activities across our Federation. Our students continue into a wide range of Higher Education (including Oxbridge), Further Education (Music and Art Colleges) and employment.

We aim to create a hard-working, friendly and caring environment through the partnership of staff, students, parents, governors, employers and other friends.  Our ethos of hard work, aiming for excellence and giving back to the school and wider community is fundamental to our success and is at the core of everything we do.

The Director of Sixth Form oversees the running of the Sixth Form at Knights Academy and is supported by a team of tutors, all of whom are on hand to offer guidance, support and academic tracking to our students throughout their two years. Our Careers Advisors have targeted programmes for each student where needs are ascertained following assessment of skills and strengths.  We also put an emphasis on opportunities to volunteer or participate in our Elite Science or Business programmes.  

There are regular enrichment events for the Sixth Form including social activities, the London UCAS Fair, Leadership Training, Master class Day and many more. Also popular are the annual ‘Federation Lectures’ from prominent speakers across a variety of topics, aimed at stretching our Federation Sixth Form students and preparing them for university education.

To obtain a broad and balanced education sixth formers are strongly advised to take advantage of the variety of opportunities on offer in the Extension Studies Programme with a wide range of opportunities offered across the Federation, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).  Our sixth form students are expected to  take an active part in the life of the school and our students act as role models for the younger students.  Notably our year 13 can go on to form the selected team of prefects and house captains who lead the wider school community.

The advantages of continuing in education after the age of sixteen are frequently stated and the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation is the ideal place to do so.

The Federation Sixth Form, opened in September 2007, comprises an already well-established Hatcham Campus at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College and the newer Knights Campus at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy.  

Students joining us become part of an integrated Federation Sixth Form. They apply to one campus or the other and lessons take place at the site of their choice.  However, our students can take advantage of activities, opportunities and facilities at either site.

The Hatcham campus is an academic sixth form providing of a wide selection of A-levels and a high quality curriculum delivered by specialist teachers and was recently graded outstanding by Ofsted. The Pepy's Rd Site building will be open from 17.00hrs until 21.00hrs.
Doors open at 17.00hrs – prefects will be guiding visitors to the classrooms until 18.00hrs

At Hatcham we see Enrichment as a part of every child’s educational experience.  An important part of Enrichment is that it must enhance the curriculum and the students’ general learning experience.  This applies both to work done in the classroom and to activities outside school.  It is important that all learners should receive an enriched diet in their everyday school life, as emphasised by our ‘Every Child Matters’ policy.

There are on average 120 different activities each year, and they take place in Enrichment time in the extended school day, or in lunchtime clubs.

Some courses are designed to ‘round out’ the basic curriculum subjects with a wider context, while others provide students with experiences outside the regular curriculum.  The Enrichment programme as a whole promotes individuality of response and encourages originality and invention.  The fact that students can make their own choice of activity in most cases allows them to take some responsibility for their own learning.

The enrichment activities take place outside the normal academy timetable (i.e. before morning registration, lunchtime or afterschool). The aim of these activities is to broaden the horizons of all our pupils and give them opportunities to develop skills outside of the traditional learning environment.  As you can see from the timetables, a wide range of activities are available to primary and secondary students. All secondary students are expected to participate in at least one enrichment activity a week. These activities extend our students learning, enhance the basic curriculum and are a fun way for students to mix, outside of their usual classes.

Public Exhibition

Haberdashers’ Aske Federation is looking to secure planning permission for a new two-form entry primary school – the Hatcham Temple Grove Free School – on the existing Hatcham College site in Pepys Road, New Cross.  A planning application is to be submitted shortly to Lewisham Council for the new school.

The proposed design of the new primary school comprises of a series of improved indoor and outdoor space including;

• Flexible indoor teaching wing
• Main hall and library court
• A series of specialist teaching areas

Key Stage 3

Students follow a common curriculum which will facilitate transition from Key Stage 2 (KS2). Flexible setting based on KS2 SATS and NFER score results are used for all subjects. Thorough monitoring of student achievement means that sets are reviewed regularly, and where appropriate, changes are made. Specific learning difficulties are identified and other special needs addressed, including those of the more able student.

From Year 8 students follow a Level 2 ICT course (AIDA) which is, for the majority of students, accredited in Year 9. This provides a full programme of major skills and practices.

In order to meet the personalised learning agenda, students spend two years in Key Stage 3 and three years in Key Stage 4. This enables all students to take their GCSE / Vocational qualifications when they are ready. Many students are therefore able to begin post-16 courses in Year 11.

Key Stage 4

In addition to the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Physical Education and Science, KS4 options are chosen. These are designed to provide a GCSE and vocational programme whereby the core is enriched by a choice of subjects incorporating Modern Foreign Languages, the Arts and Humanities, Technology and Business Education.

At both Key Stages Enrichment activities will be provided as part of the extended day, in a compulsory programme to broaden and enhance the learning experience. Careers Education, Enterprise Education and Citizenship is integral to all areas of the curriculum with a Work Experience placement for all students in Year 10.

We are working towards the Investor in Careers quality mark and as  demonstration of the school’s commitment to careers education, information, advice and guidance towards this award, one of the requirements is to ensure this commitment is formally shared by all staff, students, parents/carers and other relevant partners.

About the Federation

The Aske's Vision is one where all students in the Federation are inspired to reach their full potential, regardless of ability or background, where aspirations and achievements are constantly raised through the highest quality academic, personal and vocational teaching and guidance, and where the students and staff at the two academies benefit from each other’s strengths.

The school is named ‘Haberdashers’ Aske’s’ after Robert Aske, the benefactor whose charitable benevolent fund the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers’ administer. Aske was born in 1619 and became a Haberdasher, a merchant dealing in raw silk, and a man of substance. He died in 1689 leaving £20,000 to the Company to buy a piece of land within one mile of London and to build on it a 'Hospital' (almshouses) and a school. The rest of his estate, £12,000, he left for the benefit of the Foundation, or Charity, of which the Haberdashers' Company became trustee.

In 1690, a site was purchased in Hoxton, just north of the City, where the original Hospital and school were built. In 1824, these were demolished and a new school and almshouses built. In 1874, the almshouses were closed and the buildings were enlarged to become a day school for 600 students of both sexes.

In conjunction with these developments, land at Hatcham, near New Cross, was bought at the top of Plowed Garlic Hill, now Telegraph Hill, and plans for boys' and girls' schools were drawn up. The task facing the builders was considerable because at that time no roads passed the site. A lane ran from the Kent Road (now New Cross Road) following the direction now taken by Jerningham Road, but did not reach the top of the hill. Another lane ran from the Peckham Road (now Queen's Road).

Bad weather at that time made carriage up the hill difficult, but by October 1875 the two schools were completed on the single site. In 1889, further land was purchased in Jerningham Road and a school was built for 300 girls, the first school at Hatcham then becoming a school for 300 boys.

In 1898, the original Hoxton site became unsuitable and was sold; new sites were then purchased in Hampstead and Acton, upon which were established the separate schools for boys and girls which are now at Elstree. These are the other two schools within the Aske Foundation.

Further reorganisation took place following the 1944 Education Act, when the two Hatcham schools became voluntary controlled grammar schools. They were further reorganised as comprehensive schools in 1979, and then combined as a City Technology College in 1991.

In 2005 the Federation of Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College and Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy were set up by the Haberdashers' Company in order to increase the availability of an Aske's education to more students and make a wider use of the strengths that Aske's has to offer.

In 2008 Hatcham Temple Grove joined Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College to make it an all through 3 – 18 Academy. Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy joined the Federation in 2009.  Knights Temple Grove joined Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy to make it an all through 3 - 18 Academy in 2011.

GUIDE TO STAFF BENEFITS 

        
Child Care Voucher Scheme
All staff are entitled to apply for Childcare vouchers within the Edenred Childcare Voucher scheme.  For further details, staff should contact June Maclean in the HR department.

Ride to Work Scheme
The Federation participates in the Ride2Work scheme which allows staff to obtain substantial discounts, via tax allowances, for the purchase of a bicycle.  The accounts department (Pepys Site, Hatcham) will be happy to explain how this works in practice.  The aim of the scheme is that the bicycle is primarily used for travel to and from work.  Details can be found by accessing Evans Cycles website on http://www.evanscycles.com/ride2work

Computer Purchase Scheme
The Federation offers the opportunity to purchase computer and other ICT equipment at very competitive prices.  For further details about the scheme, staff should contact the Federation Network Manager

Staff Bursaries
The Federation benefits from the Haberdashers’ bursary scheme.  Each year, all members of staff are given the opportunity to apply for a bursary.  The main criteria for awarding the bursary is quite open but the main requirement is that it is used to improve teaching and learning and is of clear benefit to the Federation. For further information contact the Vice Principal.

Staff Hospitality
The Federation is generous in its hospitality package for staff.  In particular, a free Staff Christmas Dinner is provided as well as a free lunch on Open Days, Assessment Days and CPD Days.

Staff Counselling
All Federation staff can have free access to counselling facilities.  Fully trained student / staff counsellors are available for consultation at both Knights Academy and Hatcham College.  All discussions are conducted in the strictest confidence.

Secondment / Sabbatical Leave Policy
The Federation will support staff sabbatical leave for a period of no more than one academic year.  Please note that only one sabbatical place is available, within the Federation, in any one academic year.  Please note that this is only available to staff who have been employed within the Federation for the previous consecutive five years. The secondment / sabbatical is subject to a successful application being made to the CEO, whose decision is final.

Qualifications Support
The Federation fully support staff who wish to improve their professional qualifications.  Financial help is available to assist with course fees for courses which are approved by the Federation.  Also, the Federation will give consideration to providing time for staff to attend external sessions.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The CPD programme across the Federation has been described by Investors in People (IIP) as the ‘best CPD scheme encountered within an educational context’.  Whilst in the employ of the Federation, in order to facilitate their own professional development, all staff have full access to this programme.

Sport and Fitness
HAHC:  The Sports Hall and Fitness suite are available for staff use free of charge on Monday evenings.  The facilities comprise of:

• Fully equipped fitness suite comprising treadmills, rowing machines, exercise bikes etc.
• Indoor Arena.  This includes facilities for badminton, basketball, indoor cricket, volleyball, 5 a side football
• Outdoor, all weather playing surface, including tennis courts

HAKA: The HAKA Sports complex is a commercial enterprise but Federation staff are eligible for 20% discount on all HAHA SC services.  In addition staff will have access to the following:

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy encourages its pupils to make positive contributions to the local and wider community. With strong links to national and international organisations and charities providing many opportunities for trips and visits students are given a wide perspective on the world around them. This perspective adds significantly to pupil’s personal development and enjoyment.

There is an outstanding extra-curricular provision offered across the Academy, as with all schools in the Federation. Secondary phase pupils are given opportunities to work with younger children in the Primary phase as well as having the opportunity to undertake work in other local primary schools, hospitals, homes for the elderly, day centres and other community projects and fund raising schemes.

Like its sister schools in the Federation, HACA will network nationally and internationally, becoming involved in the International Schools project thus ensuring full benefit and opportunities for HACA students.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy has already become a focal point within the local area and will continue to be firmly rooted in the local community.  This has been demonstrated in our links with the Crayford Rotary Club and Crayford Town Archive.  In addition, we have strong links with Sainsbury’s, who have donated trophies for presentation on Speech Day and with Crayford Arrows Sports Club who have allowed us to make use of their sports facilities whilst the secondary building is under construction...  We are very committed to establishing HACA as a resource for the local community and it is our intention to continue working on this in as many ways as possible. The tradition of linking and working with other local schools will be continued in the future with technology master classes for primary schools, day and evening classes for adults, community uses such as parent and student workshops and parent and toddler groups. The new secondary building will have state of the art Technology and sporting facilities which will be available for hire to the general public. In this way, the Academy will have a distinct character, reflecting the area it serves and playing a full part in the regeneration of the area and surrounding environment.

The Technology Specialism is at the very heart of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy experience. Its influence reaches into every corner of the Academy, through all phases and into all subject areas, bringing to life the teaching and learning experiences for each student.

Technology plays the key role in forging and maintaining the highway for the all through, seamless learning environment. Technology is woven into the fabric of the Academy curriculum, supporting the existing topics and themes delivered at the primary phase.  Regular specialist Technology teaching starts from year 1 with students learning about the design and the technology around them, from the clothes they wear, the devices they play with, the environment they live in to the food they eat.

Technology continues to play the key role in supporting the all-through academy curriculum as our students develop in the secondary phase, heading for their GCSE and vocational studies. As participators in the national STEM initiative we believe that the Technology Specialism is perfectly placed to prepare our students for further and higher education and employment, particularly in all of the technology associated careers such as Engineering, manufacturing, catering, product design, construction and the textiles and fashion industries. GCE A levels and advanced vocational studies will be taught at the very highest level as a member of the Federation and Bexley consortium.

The Technology department, equipped with the latest design and manufacturing facilities is available to all phases, the students of Crayford Academy quickly becoming confident and skilled technologists. The students design and make with intuitive software, high quality materials and industry standard equipment and machinery. The learning spaces host all that is commensurate with delivering innovative, creative, exciting and cutting-edge Technology learning experiences.

The Technology learning is further enhanced by educational visits to observe and experience Design, technology and engineering where and when it happens with field trips to local sites of interest to inspire design work as well as international design study trips which offer unforgettable opportunities to gain insight into how design and the use of technology is approached around the world. Access to in-house, local and national Technology competitions and scholarship programmes provides further motivation and focus.  HACA students are confident, experienced and clear communicators in all situations, with students enjoying presenting their work from a very early stage. This is not only an important component in the field of Design and Technology but for most subject areas and is a key life skill for success.

The Technology specialism leads with a varied and inclusive enrichment programme running throughout the year, broadening the view of the subject, responding to student feedback and adding detail and depth whenever possible.

The Technology Specialism reaches out to local business and industry, developing links which see Crayford Academy students broadening their vision, raising their aspirations and taking significant steps towards securing their futures in the ever changing and challenging world.  The specialism is also developing close links with the community that it is now a significant part of. Offering its facilities and presenting opportunities with a desire to build lasting and positive relationships with all groups and individuals that make up the local and broader communities.

Federation ICT Specialism

As a Specialist ICT Federation of Academies our aims are clear. We are committed to embracing Technology throughout our whole Federation, enabling us to enhance both teaching and learning opportunities within the Federation and in the wider community within which we work. The ICT agenda has impacted on the quality of learning and teaching throughout the school. This has resulted in: a whole schools approach to using ICT as a tool for enabling interactive lessons and an improvement in student engagement and motivation. Examination results are continuing to improve with greater use being made of a visual stimulus, sharing good practice, improvement in assessment and data analysis to inform teachers, students and parents.

Each learning area houses a fully networked room with a class set of Work stations, a colour, black and white printer and a flatbed scanner. Pupils have access to a wide range of software, including graphics packages such as Adobe Photoshop, and a range of industry standard Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Freehand. In addition to this, the Academy uses Microsoft Windows and each pupil has regular access to a full suite of Microsoft Office 2010 packages. The ICT system is fast and powerful enough to stream multimedia supported by a broadband Internet connection. These excellent ICT facilities are maintained by a Federation Network Manager and 10 Network Technicians.

We work with the expectation that all our students will complete a GCSE in ICT, ensuring our leavers go on with their futures feeling confident and empowered users of ICT. Our students in KS3 follow a curriculum delivered in 100 minute discreet ICT lessons developing onto a varied and exciting KS4 curriculum, all Academies following a similar and complementary set of qualifications both enjoying the DIDA suite, preparing our students for today’s digital world. Following on with 6 further qualifications now offered within the Federation 6th form – A Level ICT and Computing, Btec including the industry standard qualifications such as Microsoft office qualification, Cisco and Oracle.

We extend the curriculum offer in ICT, with strong links to other subjects, such as Music, PE and Technology, making the application and use of ICT paramount to allow for interactive classrooms, on-line access and remote access to all curriculum and teaching materials 24 hours a day. The ICT department puts Information Technology at the heart of all teaching and learning with each school having an ICT champions committee with every department represented.

Haberdashers' Aske's Crayford Academy opened in September 2009 with the Primary phase only. It currently caters for over 750 students ranging from Nursery up to Year 9. The HMI inspection in March 2012 reported that:

‘The academy’s stimulating and innovative curriculum has a positive impact on students’ learning, and contributes well to the promotion of their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Assemblies are uplifting, and reinforce very well the academy’s ethos of respect and high aspirations’.

Key stage 2

The levels of progress made at Key Stage 2 exceeded the national average and the overall L4+ attainment figure increased from 57% in 2011 to 75% in 2012, an outstanding performance.  This now means that at Key Stage 2, Crayford is now performing at just above the national average in terms of overall attainment, which is very pleasing when one considers the initial starting point in 2009.

The focus for 2013 will be to improve on the Level 4+ performance outcomes as well as increasing L5+ higher level performance.  A number of strategies are in place which will help Crayford to achieve this.

Technology Specialism

In addition to this the curriculum has a strong mathematics and science focus across all age and ability ranges.  The specialism permeates all areas of re curriculum and is evident throughout by developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.  It is a requirement that all students study a technology subject up to the end of KS4.

The Curriculum, throughout the all-through school at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is balanced, challenging and relevant.  It provides the opportunities for every student to excel by instilling high expectations in every member of our community, while meeting the needs of the individual learner.  Our curriculum, incorporating knowledge, skills, attributes and experiences, leads to the highest standards of academic excellence and is supported by excellent teaching.

Technology Specialism

Crayford Academy promotes excellence in all aspects of technology education, will all students engaging with technology in all key stages.  It uses its specialist status to raise standards of achievement and the quality of learning in design and technology. In addition to this the curriculum has a strong mathematics and science focus across all age and ability ranges.  The specialism permeates all areas of re curriculum and is evident throughout by developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.  It is a requirement that all students study a technology subject up to the end of KS4.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is an all through, 3-18 academy which serves the local Crayford and Slade Green communities in the London Borough of Bexley. 

The academy opened in September 2009 from its predecessor Barnes Cray Primary School with a one form entry primary cohort. Subsequently, the secondary cohort has expanded year on year and Key Stage 3 is now complete with 3 year groups of 180 pupils. In total, the academy now has 820 pupils who are taught and supported 49 teachers and 57 support staff. 

It is the aim of the Haberdashers’ Federation to increase the primary cohort to 50% (i.e. 50% of each secondary year group will be from our own primary phase) and plans are now very advanced to increase the primary phase of Crayford Academy.  This will be achieved by incorporating Slade Green Junior School into the academy in September 2013.  By September 2014, as the school continues to grow, we will have approximately 1500 pupils on roll.  The school will be at its full capacity by September 2016 with the addition of a 6^th Form of 250 students thus taking the total number of pupils and students to 1750.

At Crayford, we have a fully comprehensive, mixed ability pupil body which has a very positive attitude to the school.  This is evidenced by pupils’ very good behaviour in lessons, around the school generally and going to and from school (‘Students behave well both in lessons and around the buildings and grounds’ – OFSTED March 2012).

We know that all Crayford Academy pupils have the potential to be successful and the curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in a meaningful way, often outside the confines of traditional subjects and classrooms.  We offer specialism in both Technology and Music but all subjects are regarded as important for a well-balanced education. There are very close links across departments and between the primary and secondary phases of the academy.  There are many occasions during the school year when pupils work across subjects and phases, very often as part of the established house system which operates across the academy.

It is the aim of the Crayford Academy, along with the other Haberdashers’ Federation schools, that our pupils leave with the skills and resilience needed to be happy and successful in a modern society throughout their adult lives.  To this end Crayford Academy offers pupils a range of learning outside the classroom, leadership, school community and careers opportunities which are needed to develop the basic life skills required.  With this in mind, Crayford Academy provides a safe, rigorous and challenging learning environment for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds to develop as well adjusted young adults. 

We strongly believe that good quality teaching is the key to success and we are committed to ensuring that every lesson taught in the school is at least good and often better than that. This year’s OFSTED inspection confirmed that we have excellent teachers here at Crayford and every secondary lesson observed was judged to be good or better. (‘Teaching is strong in KS3. Inspectors saw several outstanding lessons. There is outstanding teaching in the primary phase’ - OFSTED March 2012). Our expectations are extremely high in terms of pupil achievement and the quality of teaching they receive will help ensure that these expectations are met. 

High standards of pupil behaviour and uniform are also very important to us and we insist that pupils behave respectfully towards others and their environment.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy (HACA) is one of three schools which comprise the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation.  With the Haberdashers’ ethos underpinning all of our work, the Federation aims to deliver educational excellence and offers a balanced and challenging curriculum throughout, ensuring accessibility to all. The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is a specialist Technology academy, educating children from Nursery to Sixth Form through the use of innovative, personalised learning and excellent, specialised teaching.

At HACA, the Haberdashers’ tradition is an integral part of every pupil’s learning.  Pupils enjoy a positive learning experience at the Academy and this is reflected in their behaviour and attitude towards learning and to the community as a whole. Students are expected to dress smartly in the Haberdashers uniform and to respect the Haberdashers’ tradition of excellent behaviour, respect for others and politeness.

Targeted academic support is provided to enable all pupils to achieve to their full potential. One of the main advantages of an all through academy is that curriculum experiences have continuity and integration from age 3 to 18. All Primary phase children have an automatic right of entry to the Secondary phase. Transition is seamless between Years 6 and 7 and a dedicated Year 7 learning area facilitates this. Primary and Secondary teachers work together as a single staff body and share their expertise, allowing excellent opportunities for sharing resources, learning from each other and pupil and teacher exchange.

Pupils in the Primary phase follow the National Curriculum and have access to the Secondary phase specialist provision in areas such as Music, PE, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Technology. Emphasis is given to providing a safe and supportive experience that encourages high achievement and personal growth.

As the Sixth Form develops at HACA, the Post 16 students will help with mentoring younger students and organising extra-curricular activities. The house system, which mirrors that of Hatcham College and Knights Academy, promotes a sense of belonging and participation and encourages interaction between students of all year groups.  The Technology specialism is developing rapidly and provides outstanding opportunities for all academy pupils, including those who demonstrate aptitude in this specialist area.  In addition it provides the impetus for academic excellence across the whole curriculum and provides real opportunities for cross-curricular work...

The Primary phase, which is sponsored by the Temple Grove Trust, and the Sixth Form, are fully co-educational. However, classes in the Secondary phase are largely single sex in Years 7 to 11 albeit within a co-educational campus. The rationale behind this is that the Federation strongly believes that better learning takes place in a single sex context.  Boys and girls are grouped together in all other aspects of College life including plays, concerts, educational visits and enrichment activities

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Sports Complex opened in July 2007. Comprising 4 main areas:

During term time the complex is used by Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy from 7am – 6pm. Students within the school make use of its fantastic facilities for PE and other curriculum lessons.  Outside of school hours the complex is open to the general public, members and non members. Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy has sport specialist status and a shared Federation ICT specialism.

Knights Academy became a specialist sports academy in September 2005. Since this time students have gone on to achieve sporting excellence across a range of activities at local, regional, national and international level. Every student benefits from the effects of the specialism through cross curricular learning and extensive extracurricular activities. Participating and setting such a high standard of achievement boosts esteem and aspirations of those involved thus inspiring all other students and greatly adding to the ethos of the Academy. Knights Academy moved into a new building in April 2007 with outstanding sporting facilities and equipment. So good in fact the Academy hosts and organises many sporting festivals and competitions throughout the year both for Lewisham and the South East. Facilities include:

The aim of the specialism is to positively impact and greatly enhance every students learning experience. To this end the PE department has led numerous projects such as Team Read, support for literacy, Arsenal Double club (Languages), Sport and Maths intervention days, Tour de Knights Year 8 Enrichment day and Cross Curricular themed days that have been commended nationally and used as examples of excellence by the Youth Sport Trust. Mr Robert Ellis, Ofsted Inspector, noted the positive impact in his March 2008 report “Students show an exceptional awareness of healthy lifestyles and recognise the importance of regular exercise.” The Sports Enrichment Programme at Knights Academy is outstanding and provides numerous participation and excellence opportunities. All major team games and individual activities are offered with teams entering local, regional, national and international competitions. The PE and Sport team is supported by a specialist coaches in Basketball, Rugby, Fencing and two UEFA ‘A” licence coaches who run the Football Academy. Notable achievements:

Federation ICT Specialism

As a Specialist ICT Federation of Academies our aims are clear. We are committed to embracing Technology throughout our whole Federation, enabling us to enhance both teaching and learning opportunities within the Federation and in the wider community within which we work. The ICT agenda has impacted on the quality of learning and teaching throughout the school. This has resulted in: a whole schools approach to using ICT as a tool for enabling interactive lessons and an improvement in student engagement and motivation. Examination results are continuing to improve with greater use being made of a visual stimulus, sharing good practice, improvement in assessment and data analysis to inform teachers, students and parents.

Each learning area houses a fully networked room with a class set of Work stations, a colour, black and white printer and a flatbed scanner. Pupils have access to a wide range of software, including graphics packages such as Adobe Photoshop, and a range of industry standard Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Freehand. In addition to this, the Academy uses Microsoft Windows and each pupil has regular access to a full suite of Microsoft Office 2010 packages. The ICT system is fast and powerful enough to stream multimedia supported by a broadband Internet connection. These excellent ICT facilities are maintained by a Federation Network Manager and 10 Network Technicians.

We work with the expectation that all our students will complete a GCSE in ICT, ensuring our leavers go on with their futures feeling confident and empowered users of ICT. Our students in KS3 follow a curriculum delivered in 100 minute discreet ICT lessons developing onto a varied and exciting KS4 curriculum, all Academies following a similar and complementary set of qualifications both enjoying the DIDA suite, preparing our students for today’s digital world. Following on with 6 further qualifications now offered within the Federation 6th form – A Level ICT and Computing, Btec including the industry standard qualifications such as Microsoft office qualification, Cisco and Oracle.

We extend the curriculum offer in ICT, with strong links to other subjects, such as Music, PE and Technology, making the application and use of ICT paramount to allow for interactive classrooms, on-line access and remote access to all curriculum and teaching materials 24 hours a day. Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy is an all-through, 3 – 18 academy with its primary phase, Knights Temple Grove, situated on Ballamore Road, Downham. School Curriculum

Knights Temple Grove (KTG) became a two form entry school (2fe) in September 2012. The school curriculum consists of English, Mathematics, Science, IT, Technology, Art, Geography, History, Religious Education, PE and Music.  All children are taught both the core and foundation subjects by their class teachers, though extra PE tuition is provided by HAKA sports coaches. Music is also taught through specialist music provision.

A variety of teaching styles are used throughout the school including:

• Setting in literacy and numeracy (Y6)
• Groups differentiated by ability
• Group work based on specific criteria
• Individual teaching

Literacy and Numeracy

Children at KTG receive daily literacy and numeracy lessons in addition to guided reading and phonics. Reading is taught through guided reading sessions but there are also individual programmes for children who may require extra support in order to achieve an age appropriate standard in reading. KTG has a wide selection of real books that are used alongside the Oxford Reading Tree scheme in order to develop comprehension skills and promote a life-long love of books.

Daily phonics is taught formally using the Letters and Sounds phonics programme from Early Years to Year 2 with extra phonics support provided for children in Key Stage 2 who have not reached an age related standard. All children are taught spelling during literacy. Guided writing is a precision intervention tool that is taught as part of an agreed approach through literacy in order to target specific teaching skills.

Numeracy at KTG is underpinned by the Primary Numeracy Framework.  Considerable importance is attached to the children achieving and understanding mathematical concepts, processes and skills. Children also participate in daily mental maths sessions to reinforce their knowledge and understanding. A positive attitude towards the subject is encouraged through teachers presenting activities in an interesting and enjoyable way using key questions and suitable resources that allow children to participate fully in lessons.  We aim for children to develop the ability to use and apply their knowledge and understanding of mathematics in problem solving activities and real life situations.

Maths Passports are used from Y1 – Y6 to assess and promote multiplication and number bonds knowledge.

Literacy and Numeracy Interventions

Teachers use robust, rigorous tracking of each individual child in order to identify those pupils who may require extra support to reach their expected levels of progress. These may include the following intervention programmes:

• Rapid Reading - Y1, Y2
• Direct Phonics – Y2, Y3, Y4
• AcceleRead/AcceleWrite – Y5

Assessment

Every half term (an Askean term) each child is assessed by their class teacher who then meets with the Senior Leadership Team to discuss each child’s progress, how to enable them to achieve and whether additional targeted support is required.  Some children need more consolidation in their early years, while some develop quickly. Some children may experience blips along the way whilst others may need to consolidate their learning at various stages, often at the beginning of a new Key Stage or year group. Children’s attainment targets are reported to parents in parent meetings and in a formal end of year written report. Informal consultations also may take place at any time at the request of either the parents or teacher.

All aspects of assessment are monitored and evaluated on an on-going basis with planning and work samples monitored regularly to ensure consistency in assessment procedures. Dora Indresano, KTG Director of Teaching has overall responsibility for assessment.

The table below shows which level average children should be achieving in each year group. With the exception of Years 2 and 6, these are a general expectation because few children develop at an even pace.

A Level 2b is the level expected of the average child at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and a Level 4b is the level expected of an average child at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6). Each of these stages are called sub-levels and a child is generally expected to make a minimum of 2 sub-levels of progress a year regardless of ability or SEN. However at KTG our aim is for our children to make accelerated progress through the aid of quality first teaching and high expectations for all.

International Primary Curriculum

Foundation subjects such as History and Geography are taught through the cross curricular, thematic approach of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Each term classes cover a different unit, such as Rainforests, Space or Transport for example; each of which will have a specific Science or Humanities focus. Information Technology

KTG’s computer suite is timetabled for use to ensure equality of access between classes, from nursery to Y6. Each class has one timetabled session a week, which is intended for the teaching of specific IT skills and additional time is available for cross curricular use. The school also has laptops available for children to use in class for research work linked to their International Primary Curriculum (IPC) topic.

The IT coordinator works collaboratively with each subject coordinator in turn, to raise staff awareness in the ways IT can be embedded into other curriculum areas.

The purchasing of new IT equipment, such as digital video cameras, Early Years hardware and data loggers enable the embedding of ICT in new ways each day.

Religious Education

The 1988 Education Reform Act re-enacts and reinforces the requirements of the 1944 Act that all county and voluntary schools are to provide Religious Education for all pupils. R.E. is included alongside the National Curriculum in the basic curriculum which all maintained schools must provide for their registered pupils, in accordance with a locally agreed syllabus. The 1988 Act also requires the school to organise a daily act of collective worship that is to be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character. Such assemblies are both spiritually and morally uplifting, developing a sense of unity and forming an integral and valuable part of the education progress. Collective worship and assemblies are held daily. Parents are invited to attend class assemblies every Friday.

Parents who wish to withdraw their child from RE and collective worship must notify the Head in writing so that alternative arrangements may be made.

Enrichment

As Knights Temple Grove we are fortunate enough to be part of the Temple Grove Schools Trust. Through the trust we receive additional funding to be used to enhance the quality of our children’s education through an extensive programme of enrichment activities. These have included:

• After school guitar, choir and dance tuition;
• Improved music curriculum and tuition;
• Recorder lessons for Y4 and Y4/5;
• Black History Month workshops;
• A Stagecoach drama teacher to work with Year 6 and deliver after-school classes;
• Shakespeare for Schools programme for Year 5;
• KS1 visits to the theatre at Christmas;
• Improved sports delivery with rugby and swimming coaches;

Early Years

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for children aged 3-5 incorporates Reception and Nursery classes and represents the formative stages of a child’s education. At this stage the children follow the learning and development requirements of the revised statutory framework. All children are given equal access and opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in the following areas of learning and Development:

In the Early Years children learn through planned, purposeful play through a mixture of child-initiated and teacher-led learning opportunities. This is essential in order for children to develop, build confidence and the ability to relate to others. This will take place both indoors and outdoors and is a characteristic of effective early learning.

EYFS Profile

Children are assessed throughout their time in the Early Years through observations, questioning, sampling, parental and other adult contributions and also the child itself. Tracking is provided using the Development Matters guidance information.  All children are assessed at the end of Early Years through the EYFS Profile in order to provide a reliable, valid and accurate assessment to support a smooth transition into Key Stage 1.

Key Stage 1 (Children aged 5 – 7)

The children in KS1 follow the national curriculum as well as the DfE guidance on RE, PSHE and Citizenship. The transition from Reception to Year 1 is dealt with sensitively, especially in the first term where Year 1 children continue to learn through play and have daily access to outside activities.  Year 1 teachers use the EYFS Profile to build an accurate picture of children’s learning and progress. All learning and teaching in KS1 is based on termly themes with children exploring subject knowledge through an overarching topic.

KS1 ends with children taking internally-assessed tests, however their end result will be based on the work they produce day-to- day in the classroom. The expectation is that all children will achieve a Level 2+ prior to continuing to KS2.

Key Stage 2 (Children aged from 7 – 11)

In Key Stage 2 all children continue to follow the National Curriculum with the same subjects taught as at Key Stage 1.  Teaching of the Foundation subjects is thematic and delivered through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Wherever it is possible cross-curricular links are made between all subjects. Maths and English are taught daily and there are 2 hours per week of Science and PE. Pupils are also given the opportunity to learn to swim in KS2.

Most teaching is whole-class based, but there is ability setting in Mathematics and English in Year 6 and PE for this group is taught mainly in single gender groups.

At the end of Year 6 children’s attainment is assessed through the SATs tests in Reading, Writing and Maths. The expectation at this level is that children should leave the primary phase at Level 4+.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy is part of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation in south-east London.

Knights Academy is an all-through, 3 – 18 academy educating more than 1600 children from the Lewisham and Bromley communities. We regard ourselves as a community school, serving the educational needs of the Downham community in which we are rooted.. Our aim is deliver an education to the children we serve that is aspirational and encourages them to be ambitious. This education is delivered through a balanced, challenging and personalised curriculum that ensures accessibility to all.

Knights Academy is a specialist sports academy, with a wide range of sporting activities to meet the needs of girls and boys. Dance is one of our elite programmes together with those for basketball (girls and boys); rugby and football (boys and girls). Our links with Cambridge United Football Club have propelled a number of our students into professional football careers, including playing for England, again both boys and girls. Information Technology is our second specialism and is taught throughout the academy; we expect all of our students to gain an IT qualification which enables them to apply their IT skills in the real world of work and we aim to enable those who wish to programme, code and develop industry-level skills to do so.

Our primary phase, Knights Temple Grove, has been an integral part of the academy since January 2011. The school has made good progress in the past year and primary pupils will exceed the floor standards in 2012. These changes have been achieved through the new leadership team; a new curriculum (IPC); literacy and numeracy initiatives; the development of quality-first teaching; rigorous assessment cycles; pupil progress meetings, and target-setting.  We believe that the all-through academy will enhance the learning opportunities for students from our local area and give them access to the benefits of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s educational tradition. Our curriculum is fashioned to meet the needs of our diverse student population and was described as “outstanding” by OfSTED in 2011. Our students learn in largely single-sex classes at KS3 and 4, an Askean tradition, and the evidence suggests it leads to better outcomes for both boys and girls. Students, of both genders, share form time and have numerous other opportunities for meeting each other in clubs, societies and other extra-curricular activities. Learning does not only occur in the classroom. All students are entitled to participate in a wide range of out of hours’ opportunities.

Leadership training is given to students from primary years onwards, culminating in a strong team of school leaders and prefects, led by the academy’s Head Boy and Head Girl.

Our Sixth Form continues to grow through our Federation with Hatcham College and this provides our senior students with exceptional learning opportunities and the prospect of a university education. Indeed, 75% of our students go on to higher education and in 2012 our first Knights students will go to Cambridge University to read medicine. Many go to universities of the prestigious Russell Group too.                                                                                       

Sixth Formers help with mentoring and activities. A house system promotes a sense of belonging and participation. The sport specialism develops excellence and provides for the highest level of attainment for pupils showing aptitude in this specialist area but it also provides the impetus for excellence across the whole curriculum. We are introducing five new A Level courses to the Knights’ curriculum in 2012 – French, Art, Geography, Physical Education and Business Studies, to augment our already large range. In addition we run two Elite Post 16 programmes in Science and Business Studies to cater for top achieving students from within the Federation and from other local schools.

Knights Temple Grove, our primary phase, is now integrated with the secondary phase and great progress is being made to improve outcomes for all of our primary children.  We will exceed the floor standard of 60% in KS 2 SATs exams in 2012. The success of the school has been achieved through the hard work and rigour of Ms Sam Linton, the new Head of Primary Phase, and her team. The levels of progress made by our children in a short space of time have been nothing short of miraculous.

We have introduced a new primary curriculum model; literacy and numeracy development programmes; booster classes; extra-curricular enrichment activities, ranging from Italian to ICT; dance to drama; choirs to cricket!

We have introduced a strong student voice programme; prefects in Year 11 and Year 13; learning mentors in Year 12. Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College, Music Specialist School

In September 2005 Hatcham College adopted music as our main specialism. The music specialism affects every student at Aske’s, and all students are given the opportunity to benefit from its vibrant music tradition. It is promoted in cross curricular learning as a way of supporting the student’s musical learning and using the specialism to benefit other areas of learning as well as team teaching and considering cross-curricular aspects in schemes of work.

Music has always flourished in the academy, and we are continually moving from strength to strength and pushing our standards ever higher. Maintaining high standards generates the feeling that high achievement is the norm. It also raises the self esteem of students involved, and this is celebrated by their peers.

The Music Department continually strives to raise the profile of music within the College and through extended curricular events. These performances and displays generate excitement, and students who participate are respected and enthused about what they are achieving. This in turn adds to good ethos of the College.

The Music Department also engages with outside agencies to enhance the learning experiences of the students and promoting their input into the local community. In the past year the College has performed at City Hall for the GLA Memorial Service on invitation of the Mayor, launched a new scheme with the Royal Ballet as well as the Senior Chamber Orchestra appearing on the BBC’s ‘One Show’ in April and the Senior Gospel Choir appearing as a featured choir at ‘The Season for Love’ event at Fairfields Hall in Croydon. All of these help to raise the profile of instrumental music within Hatcham College and beyond, spark interest in instrument learning before Key Stage 3, promote community cohesion, play a role in recruiting new students to College and promote the school to students in local primary schools. We want to encourage a learning community within and beyond the school.

Notable achievements:

• 75 HAHC students have been awarded a place at the London Centre for Young Musicians, more than in each of the local 3 separate boroughs
• 6 students study at the Junior Department of Trinity College of Music, London
• 11 are members of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra
• 10 are members of the London Youth Symphonic Band.

Musical activities both in and out of the classroom encourage students to work together in various combinations, transcending age, gender and race, developing positive relationships without bullying or discriminating. We encourage social cohesion between students across the College and prepare them for the future.

Federation ICT Specialism

As a Specialist ICT Federation of Academies our aims are clear. We are committed to embracing Technology throughout our whole Federation, enabling us to enhance both teaching and learning opportunities within the Federation and in the wider community within which we work. The ICT agenda has impacted on the quality of learning and teaching throughout the school. This has resulted in: a whole schools approach to using ICT as a tool for enabling interactive lessons and an improvement in student engagement and motivation. Examination results are continuing to improve with greater use being made of a visual stimulus, sharing good practice, improvement in assessment and data analysis to inform teachers, students and parents.

Each learning area houses a fully networked room with a class set of Work stations, a colour, black and white printer and a flatbed scanner. Pupils have access to a wide range of software, including graphics packages such as Adobe Photoshop, and a range of industry standard Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Freehand. In addition to this, the Academy uses Microsoft Windows and each pupil has regular access to a full suite of Microsoft Office 2010 packages. The ICT system is fast and powerful enough to stream multimedia supported by a broadband Internet connection. These excellent ICT facilities are maintained by a Federation Network Manager and 10 Network Technicians.

We work with the expectation that all our students will complete a GCSE in ICT, ensuring our leavers go on with their futures feeling confident and empowered users of ICT. Our students in KS3 follow a curriculum delivered in 100 minute discreet ICT lessons developing onto a varied and exciting KS4 curriculum, all Academies following a similar and complementary set of qualifications both enjoying the DIDA suite, preparing our students for today’s digital world. Following on with 6 further qualifications now offered within the Federation 6th form – A Level ICT and Computing, Btec including the industry standard qualifications such as Microsoft office qualification, Cisco and Oracle.

We extend the curriculum offer in ICT, with strong links to other subjects, such as Music, PE and Technology, making the application and use of ICT paramount to allow for interactive classrooms, on-line access and remote access to all curriculum and teaching materials 24 hours a day. The ICT department puts Information Technology at the heart of all teaching and learning with each school having an ICT champions committee with every department represented.

Students follow a common curriculum. Setting, based on students’ KS2 SATS results, is used in Year 7 for Maths and English, whilst other Year 7 groups are initially of mixed ability. Specific learning difficulties are identified and other special needs addressed, including those of the more able student. Setting is introduced in a number of other subjects later in Year 7 or in Year 8.

All students have either French or German from Year 7 to Year 9. In Year 8 the more able students will be able to study a second language. The additional languages available from Year 8 will be Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese and Latin.

From Year 8 students follow a Level 2 ICT course (AIDA) which is, for the majority of students, accredited in Year 9. This provides a full programme of major skills and practices.

Where appropriate students will be entered for Key Stage 3 SATS examinations in Year 8 and will begin the Key Stage 4 programme in Year 9.

Wherever setting operates there is regular monitoring to ensure that students are following a programme appropriate to their learning needs.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

In addition to the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education, KS4 options are chosen. These are designed to provide a GCSE programme whereby the core is enriched by a choice of subjects including ICT, D&T, Modern Foreign Languages, the Arts, Humanities and Business Education.

In KS4 students can continue with the language or languages they have been learning in Key Stage 3. Latin and Mandarin are also offered as an option at GCSE level.  It is not advised that they select a language that they have not previously studied. 

Careers Guidance and Citizenship are integral parts of the extended curriculum offered at KS4.   Students receive a Careers interview and have discussions about pathways post Year 11.  They also complete a period of Work Experience in Year 11 which prepares them for the world of work and is an integral part of cross-curricular curriculum.

In addition to the traditional curriculum offered, a range of Enrichment activities are provided.  These include the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Art clubs, the Debate Society, homework support and subject catch up sessions.  These activities are provided to broaden the students’ experiences and enhance their learning.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College is an all-through, 3 – 18 academy with its primary phase, Hatcham Temple Grove, between two sites, Jerningham Road and Pepys Road in New Cross.

The Pepys Site is home to the Lower School (Nursery – Year 4) lead by Mrs Bobby Woodruff. The Jerningham Road site houses the Middle School (Years 5 - 8).

School Curriculum

Hatcham Temple Grove (HTG) is a two form entry school. The school curriculum consists of English, Mathematics, Science, IT, Technology, Art, History, Science, Religious Education, Physical Education, Modern Foreign Languages and Music.  All children are taught the core subjects by their class teacher. Middle School (and some Lower School) children have specialist teachers, from the Secondary, teach their foundation subjects, including PE, DT, Science (in labs), MFL, Music and IT.  All Music is also taught through specialist music provision.

A variety of teaching styles are used throughout the school including:

• Whole class teaching
• Setting in literacy and maths (Y6)
• Groups differentiated by ability
• Group work based on specific criteria
• Individual teaching
• Mixed Ability Teaching

Literacy and Numeracy

Children at HTG receive daily literacy and maths lessons in addition to guided reading and phonics (EYFS – Year 4). Reading is taught through guided reading sessions but there are also individual programmes for children who may require extra support, either to achieve an age appropriate standard in reading or to push G&T readers. Every classroom at HTG has a child-friendly reading area with fiction and non-fiction books for the children to choose from as well as the use of a full range of Oxford Reading Tree and Snap Dragon scheme books. We want our children to develop a life-long love of reading.

Daily phonics is taught formally using the Letters and Sounds, Phonics Play and Jolly Phonics programmes from Early Years to Year 4. All children are taught spelling during literacy. Guided writing is a precision intervention tool that is taught as part of an agreed approach through literacy in order to target specific teaching skills.

Maths at HTG is taught every morning and supported by the Primary Numeracy Framework. Importance is placed on achieving and understanding mathematical concepts, processes, and skills. Lessons are structured to include: mental maths sessions, whole class and group teaching and independent learning time, to reinforce their knowledge and understanding. Teachers prepare lessons using quality resources from a variety of places to accommodate different styles of learning. We aim for children to develop the ability to use and apply their knowledge and understanding of mathematics in problem solving activities and real life situations.

Literacy and Numeracy Interventions

Pupils who may require extra support to reach their expected levels of progress are provided opportunities to learn in smaller intervention groups. These may include the following intervention programmes:

• Early Literacy Support (ELS) – Y1
• P Levels Maths – Y2
• P Levels Literacy – Y2 and Y3
• Rapid Reading - Y1, Y2
• Accelerated Reading  – Y2 – Y6
• Toe by Toe – Y5
• Springboard – Y5-Y6

Assessment

Every half term (an Askean term) each child is assessed by their class teacher. These assessments are discussed with the children to explain what their targets are to move forward.

Then the Senior Leadership Team meet with the teacher’s to discuss each child’s progress, how to enable them to move on and whether additional targeted support is required. 

Levels and targets are reported to parents during Parents Evenings held twice a year. Informal consultations also may take place at any time at the request of either the parents or teacher.

 All aspects of assessment are monitored and evaluated on an on-going basis with planning and work samples monitored regularly to ensure consistency in assessment procedures.

The table below shows which level average children should be achieving in each year group. With the exception of Years 2 and 6, these are a general expectation because few children develop at an even pace.

A Level 2b is the level expected of the average child at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and a Level 4b is the level expected of an average child at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6). Each of these stages are called sub-levels and a child is generally expected to make a minimum of 2 sub-levels of progress a year regardless of ability or SEN. However at HTG our aim is for our children to make accelerated progress through the aid of quality first teaching and high expectations for all.

International Primary Curriculum

Foundation subjects such as History and Geography are taught through the cross curricular, thematic approach of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Every two terms classes cover a different unit, such as Rainforests, Space or Transport.  

HTG has a 2 year overview that has mapped out the units that our taught. We have embedded our Literacy in the thematic units to give the children a richer understanding of the topic.

Information Technology

HTG use the computer suites at HAHC, which is timetabled for use from Reception to Year 6. Each class has one timetabled session a week, which is intended for the teaching of specific IT skills and additional time is available for cross curricular use.

The Management Team work collaboratively with staff to raise staff awareness of the ways IT can be embedded into other curriculum areas.

The purchasing of new IT equipment, such as digital video cameras, Early Years hardware and data loggers enables the embedding of ICT in new ways each day.

Religious Education

The 1988 Education Reform Act re-enacts and reinforces the requirements of the 1944 Act that all county and voluntary schools are to provide Religious Education for all pupils. R.E. is included alongside the National Curriculum in the basic curriculum which all maintained schools must provide for their registered pupils, in accordance with a locally agreed syllabus. The 1988 Act also requires the school to organise a daily act of collective worship that is to be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character. Such assemblies are both spiritually and morally uplifting, developing a sense of unity and forming an integral and valuable part of the education progress. Collective worship and assemblies are held daily.

Parents who wish to withdraw their child from RE and collective worship must notify the Head of School in writing so that alternative arrangements may be made.

Enrichment

Hatcham Temple Grove is very fortunate to be part of the Temple Grove Schools Trust. Through the trust we receive additional funding to be used to enhance the quality of our children’s education through an extensive programme of enrichment activities. These have included:

• Improved music curriculum and tuition;
• Violin and Recorder lessons for Y4
• Improved sports delivery with Lewisham Community Sports
• New guided reading books for our library and classrooms;
• Resources for the summer disco and Y6 ball

Early Years

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for children aged 3-5 incorporates Reception and Nursery classes and represents the formative stages of a child’s education. At this stage the children follow the learning and development requirements of the revised statutory framework. All children are given equal access and opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in the following areas of Learning and Development:

In the Early Years children learn through planned, purposeful play with  a mixture of child-initiated and teacher-led learning opportunities. This is essential in order for children to develop, build confidence and the ability to relate to others. This will take place both indoors and outdoors and is a characteristic of effective early learning.

EYFS Profile

Children are assessed throughout their time in the Early Years through observations, questioning, sampling, parental and other adult contributions and also the child itself. Tracking is provided using the Development Matters guidance information.  All children are assessed at the end of Early Years through the EYFS Profile in order to provide a reliable, valid and accurate assessment to support a smooth transition into Key Stage 1.

Key Stage 1 (Children aged 5 – 7)

The children in KS1 follow the national curriculum as well as the DfE guidance on RE, PSHE and Citizenship. The transition from Reception to Year 1 is dealt with sensitively, especially in the first term. All learning and teaching in KS1 is based on termly IPC themes with children exploring subject knowledge through an overarching topic.

KS1 ends with children taking internally-assessed tests, however their end result will be based on the work they produce day-to- day in the classroom. The expectation is that all children will achieve a Level 2+, ideally a 2b, prior to moving into KS2.

Key Stage 2 (Children aged from 7 – 11)

In Key Stage 2 all children continue to follow the National Curriculum. All learning and teaching in KS1 is based on termly IPC themes with children exploring subject knowledge through an overarching topic. Wherever it is possible cross-curricular links are made between all subjects. Maths and English are taught daily and there are 2 hours per week of Science and PE. Pupils are also given the opportunity to learn to swim in Year 4.

Most teaching is whole-class based, but there is ability setting in Mathematics in Year 6. PE and MFL are gender set in Year 6.

At the end of Year 6 children’s attainment is assessed through the SATs tests in Reading, Writing and Maths. The expectation at this level is that children should leave the primary phase at Level 4+, ideally a 4b.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College is the Lead School in the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation which aims to deliver a balanced and challenging curriculum throughout ensuring accessibility to all. Hatcham College is a specialist Music and ICT academy, educating children from Nursery to Sixth Form through the use of excellent, innovative, personalised learning and specialised teaching.

Exceptional support is provided to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential. Haberdashers’ Aske’s tradition is an integral part of every pupil’s lifelong learning at Hatcham College. Pupils enjoy their time at the College and this is reflected in behaviour and attitude towards their learning and to the community as a whole.

In September 2008 Hatcham College became an all through academy, the benefits of which are boundless. Curriculum experiences have continuity and integration from ages 3 to 18. All Primary phase children have an automatic right of entry to the Secondary phase so transition is seamless between Years 6 and 7 as well as progression through the other key stages. Primary and Secondary teachers work together and share expertise allowing opportunities for sharing resources, learning from each other and pupil and teacher exchange. Pupils in the Primary phase follow the National Curriculum and have access to the Secondary phase specialist provision in such things as Music, PE, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Technology. Emphasis is given to providing a safe and supportive experience that encourages high achievement and personal growth.

The music specialism at Hatcham College develops excellence and provides for the highest level of attainment for pupils showing aptitude in this specialist area but it also provides the impetus for excellence across the whole curriculum.

The Primary phase as well as the Sixth Form is fully co-educational. However classes in the Secondary phase are largely single sex in Years 7 to 11 within a co-educational campus. Boys and girls are together in all other aspects of College life: plays, concerts, trips and enrichment activities.

Hatcham College is hugely popular with parents and children and brings stability and self esteem to all involved. For the past decade Hatcham College has been oversubscribed by 12:1.

The College has been recognised as a Leading Edge Partner School in recognition of us being a leader in innovation and collaboration. We are also member of the Future Vision Key Schools Trust and advise the Future Vision Policy group on education initiatives for the Specialist Schools Trust.

A warm welcome from myself and all the students and staff at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College. The Federation vision is one where all students are inspired to reach their full potential, regardless of ability or background, where aspirations and achievements are constantly raised through the highest quality academic, personal and vocational teaching and guidance, and where the students and staff at all three academies benefit from each other’s strengths.

Hatcham College is a specialist music and ICT College, educating children from nursery to sixth form through the use of excellent, innovative, personalised learning and specialist teaching.  Exceptional support is provided to enable all children to achieve their full potential.  Haberdashers’ Aske’s tradition is an integral part of every child’s lifelong learning at Hatcham College.  Our young people enjoy their time at the College and this is reflected in behaviour and attitude towards their learning and to the community as a whole.  Hatcham College is hugely popular with parents and children and bring stability and self-esteem to all involved.

Hatcham College provides a safe, rigorous and challenging learning environment for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds to develop as well adjusted young adults.  Our expectations are extremely high in terms of pupil achievement, behaviour and uniform and we insist that pupils behave respectfully toward others and their environment.

In total Hatcham College has over 2000 students in our 3 – 18 all through school. We are one of the most oversubscribed schools in the country, with a ratio of 12:1 applications for the past decade.

We offer the full national curriculum as well as specialising in Music and ICT. This specialism alongside our strong Arts and Humanities departments led us to achieve the Gold Arts Marks Award. Science, Mathematics and Technology continue to be major strengths at the College.  All students and staff are involved in our extensive enrichment programme which forms an integral part of our curriculum with sessions taking place weekly. We expect all students to stay on in education to the age of 18 and we hope they will stay with the College, provided we have an appropriate course on offer. The majority of our students then progress  into Higher and Further education.

As Principal I aim to work in partnership with our parents to ensure our students achieve their very best. We want our leavers to be independent, creative, knowledgeable, responsible and proud of whatever they do in the future.

All schools within Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation are committed to working with their local community and incorporating this commitment in all areas of education. As part of a wider community Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation to promote national and global networks.  

Local Community

The Federation seeks to identify specifics needs of each schools local and wider community. A plan of action is then developed whereby students and staff are engaged in making positive and effective contributions.

The three Federation schools all have a community purpose with facilities allowing the following:

• Hatcham College hires out its buildings to adult learning classes, faith groups, youth projects and weddings and parties.
• Knights Academy has a sports complex open to the public providing a variety of sporting activities, as well as a holiday club for students from across the borough. 
• Crayford Academy will have sporting and technology facilities open to the public, upon the opening of the new building in 2011.

Global Community

Throughout their time at the Federation, learners develop their understanding of the national community so that they can appreciate and value diversity, gain awareness of human rights and develop the social skills need to participate in society as a whole.

Specialist events run regularly to celebrate the national and internal diversity such as multicultural evenings involving parents, students and staff as well as partnerships with a variety of educational institutions, charities and clubs and groups.

Members of the Federation Leadership team are involved in educational and government forums, contributing to policy reforms and initiatives.

Mission Statement of the Aske’s Alumni Association (A3):

To provide a solid, coherent, vibrant organisation that will seek to:

• enable friendships to continue;
• provide a good networking set up to the mutual benefit of all members;
• be the umbrella organisation that incorporates both the Hatcham Association (Girls) and Old Askean Association (Boys);
• provide support and help for the school and its students;
• provide a substantial source of financial help to ensure that Hatcham can continue to provide its young people with the best possible educational environment;
• keep members informed about the life of the College and its development via newsletter;
• help to raise the profile of the College both locally and further afield;
• put on 3 major social events per year: a carol service and Christmas social; a sponsored event (spring); and a summer ball;
• invite A3 members to speak to students on subjects such as careers, university life and other matters; and
• invite current students to address meetings of the A3.

The Haberdashers' Company is one of the twelve 'great' Livery Companies of the City of London. The Livery Companies developed from the medieval trade guilds which controlled the quality of the goods sold by their members and laid down standards for the training of apprentices - in the case of the Haberdashers the goods were hats, costume accessories and other small wares.

A company of Haberdashers are known to have existed in 1371. The Company reached the peak of its commercial influence during the Tudor period, and it was not until the second half of the seventeenth century that its function began to change.

Today the main concern of the Company is the administration of the many charities, primarily concerned with education, of which it is the trustee.

As trustee of the Aske’s Charity, the Haberdashers’ Company continues to safeguard the original intentions of Robert Aske. It has been the main sponsor of Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College since its inception and supports students in many aspects of their education, including music and higher education, and this now includes Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy and Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy on an equal basis.

Temple Grove Trust

Temple Grove Schools Trust is an incorporated charity founded some 50 years ago and springs from one of the country’s oldest prep schools, Temple Grove - the subject of the books ‘Cradle of Empire’ and ‘Waterfield’s School’. Temple Grove Bursary Fund is working together, with the Trust, to share in its contemporary aim to inspire excellence in primary education, whilst creating meaningful and lasting cross-overs between the state and private sectors. The Trust's core interests are to:

• Influence the development of education
• Invest in projects - placing children and staff before buildings
• Provide governance - delegating performance to professional staff and providing them with additional support
• Together, with the Temple Grove Bursary Fund, seek to relieve individual hardship, within its schools and other projects
