Training School

As a result of achieving High Performing Specialist School status (HPSS) Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College became a Training School in April 2009. Once up and running in September 2009 the College will be working with the other schools in the Federation and within the local area to provide high quality training opportunities for teachers and support staff.

The new status reflects and acknowledges the College’s long standing commitment to providing excellent training for its staff (CPD) – both teaching and non-teaching and to initial teacher training (ITT). These two complimentary areas will form the bedrock for the Training School’s activities however the College now has an exciting opportunity to considerably increase the scope and range of its activities. These plans include a number of new projects and further developing initiatives in which the College is already involved:

  • Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) – the government’s stated intention is to make teaching a masters profession and HAHC is working with three of London’s most prestigious university providers of initial teacher training/continuous professional development to devise and provide this new qualification we envisage being a hub school for provision of the MTL in south-east London.
  • Work closely with Lewisham as our Local Authority to respond to a number of perceived local needs such as training for school governors
  • Community inter-agency work the Every Child Matters agenda necessities closer co-operation between police, health, social services and schools and the Training School will provide the College with the opportunity to play a significant role in this area
  • Providing training for teachers in other schools and contexts to deliver high quality ‘well- being’ education – a new and developing strength of the College
  • Develop community Music Education
  • Training Higher Learning Teaching Assistants to support Gifted & Talented pupils

Developing established initiatives

  • Increase the College’s capacity to provide employment based initial teacher training through the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)
  • Provide staff with the opportunity to develop small scale research projects which will thus further develop the culture of reflective practice and inform future developments
  • Primary masterclass in English, Maths, Technology and Science
