| The School Sports Co-ordinator (SSCo) initiative is a joint national programme developed and implemented by the DfES, DCMS, NOF, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust.
The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School Sports Partnership based at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy will include four secondary schools from September 2005 with the remaining two Lewisham schools joining the partnership in September 2006. Each secondary school will be responsible for assisting and supporting the co-ordination of curriculum and out of school hours Sport and Physical Education for a specific cluster of 32 Primary and special schools in the borough.
The Partnership is co-ordinated and managed from the hub school, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy by the Partnership Development Manager. Within each of the secondary schools involved is a School Sports Coordinator (SSCo). These highly skilled PE practitioners work alongside the Primary Link Teachers (PLT’s) within each of their partner primaries to develop PE in all its forms.
One of the primary objectives of the programme is to develop and enhance avenues of opportunity for all school-aged pupils within the area of sport and PE and increase overall participation levels. This supports the Government’s Public Service Agreement, which aims for 85% of pupils (aged 5-16) to have access to 2 hours quality PE and school sport provision, per week, by 2008.
The Partnership members will be constantly working towards targets specified in the Partnership Development Plan (PDP). The PDP will be written by the Partnership Development Manager following an extensive audit of sports and physical activity provision carried out by the PLT’s with the support and guidance of the
SSCo’s.
Their key aims of the programme are to:
- to enhance the quality of curriculum PE;
- develop out-of-hours opportunities and;
- focus on the disadvantaged and inclusion.
