Able, Gifted & Talented

Welcome to the HAHC able, gifted and talented page. The purpose of this page is to outline our provision for able, gifted and talented pupils at Hatcham College.

Any questions please contact our Able, Gifted and Talented Coordinator Mr Hancock on g.hancock@haaf.org.uk.

We use a variety of different indicators to establish the group of pupils. Particularly important is the input of teaching staff. This means that each subject area will have a named list of pupils who excel or should excel in that subject and will be challenged accordingly. It is also important to recognise that we review the lists regularly so different pupils at different times will benefit from the programme.

Catering to the needs of the more able is a high priority at Hatcham College. We also aim to provide a full range of opportunities, trips and programmes for all learners at the college.

We are very proud of the opportunities we have available to our more able pupils. We offer a range of specially designed events both in school and beyond. They include Scholars Programme (from The Brilliant Club), Future Leader, and University taster days.

The Scholars Programme from the Brilliant Club aim to increase access to highly selective universities to potential first generation graduates. They do this by giving our pupils the opportunity to visit two highly selective universities, work with a PhD student on a topic and complete a dissertation graded at a level above their key stage. The Scholars is available to pupils in years 7/8 and 9/10. The places are limited to 24 scholars per programme. Places are filled through consultation with the head of the year involved, the A,G&T coordinator and the head of department most related to the topic area concerned.

The Future Leader event gives our pupils an opportunity to meet professionals from a wide range of industries, broaden their horizons of possible career paths by providing role models from a wide variety of professions, and build their confidence by giving them the opportunity to talk to and question the professionals. Although places are limited to 90, this event is available to any pupil in years 10-13.

We would value any feedback you have regarding the provision already in place and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries with regard to more able provision.
