Haberdasher’s approach to Science

We are at an exciting time of change as a result of the reformed exams for the new GCSEs. The collaborative work we are currently doing as a Federation means that there are opportunities for students to have a seamless transition from KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5. Our Science curriculum is designed to build on the skills required for these exams so that our students are fully prepared to apply the skills required for effective experimental work and exam success.

There is a much greater focus on Core Practicals in Science and this means that students must be able to analyze, interpret and evaluate sets of data from a variety of experiments. There is also much greater emphasis on the volume of knowledge that students are expected to retain and we are working closely with our students to ensure they have the study skills that will enable them to achieve their potential and make good progress.

Key Stage 3

In KS3, students will develop their knowledge in the 3 major realms of Science – Chemistry, Biology and Physics. We have created a bespoke curriculum that enables students to begin their Science journey in Year 7 with an exciting and engaging scheme of learning. As students progress into Key Stage 4 they should have the knowledge and skills to enable them to access the Edexcel GCSE 9-1 curriculum.

We recommend that students in Year 7-9 purchase a CGP Science revision guide that can be bought from ParentPay.

We also recommend the websites below to support their learning:

Year 7

In year 7, students cover the following topics:

Biology Chemistry Physics
Cells tissues and organs Mixtures and separation Energy
Sexual reproduction Acids and alkalis Current & electricity
Muscles and bones Particle model Forces
Ecosystems Atoms, elements and compounds Sound

Year 8

In year 8, students cover the follwing topics:

Biology Chemistry Physics
Breathing & respiration Combustion

Earth & space

Food & nutrition The periodic table Energy transfers
Plants and reproduction Metals and their uses Fluids
Unicellular organisms Atomic structure & nuclear physics Light

Year 9

In year 9, students cover the following topics:

Biology Chemistry Physics
Genetics & evolution Carbon chemistry Forces & Motion
Growing our food Chemical reactions More on electricity
Revising KS3 biology Revising KS3 chemistry Revising KS3 physics
Preparing for GCSE biology Preparing for GCSE chemistry Preparing for GCSE physics

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4 we are following the Edexcel Science curriculum. The majority of our students will take Combined Science in which they will receive two Science grades (1-9). Some students will choose to take Separate Science GCSEs in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. We recommend that only students in the higher ability groups select Triple Science as an option and this is usually discussed with their class teacher before they select Triple Science as an option.
