Media Studies

MEDIA STUDIES AT HATCHAM

Media Studies is a course which challenges students across a number of disciplines requiring analytical, practical and independent research skills.

This course emphasises the development of practical skills that have vocational purpose, such as:

  • pre-production
  • filming
  • editing
  • web-design

whilst providing students with the critical vocabulary necessary to deconstruct media artefacts in a traditional academic fashion.

Students receive a comprehensive and integrated coverage of media theory and practice, focusing on the four key concepts of:

  • forms
  • audiences
  • institutions
  • representation
  • with special emphasis on emerging technologies.

There are also opportunities to investigate personal media interests and to follow a rolling programme of production briefs and pre-set topics in order to prepare students for progression into work or higher education in a range of media-related areas.

 

This year we have established a resource sharing partnership with Goldsmiths University, one of the leading Media and Communications institutions in the UK, which will provide our students with additional learning from senior lecturers.

 

Recently graduated students who have studied this subject have been successful in gaining places on Media related degree courses at universities such as Sussex, Leeds and Goldsmiths. Furthermore, Media Studies alumni have also gone on to have successful careers in the media industry.
