Modern Foreign Languages

Head of Department Ms E Aubert e.aubert@haaf.org.uk

The department aims to provide intellectual stimulation, enjoyment and a sense of achievement and to encourage social interaction through an emphasis on communication, and to offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries where the language is spoken.

Pupils have the opportunity to choose whether they study French or Spanish at KS3, and they can then opt to continue studying their chosen language at KS4.

Pupils develop their skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in their chosen language, and by the end of KS3 they should have a sound knowledge of the basic grammar and vocabulary they need in order to talk about themselves, their family and their friends.

We are planning many exciting opportunities for pupils to learn outside the classroom including trips locally and abroad.  The MFL team are also in the process of forming a link with a school in France so that pupils can speak to French natives their own age.

The exam board for both GCSE French and Spanish is AQA.  There are opportunities for pupils to sit their community language GCSE, we have done this with a number of pupils always providing support to gain the best outcomes for pupils.
