The work of any Music Department is primarily judged on the curriculum it offers its students and the results which they achieve. However, Music Departments should also be judged on the quality, breadth and quantity of their extended provision; by Ofsted, the College, the Governing body, parents and other interested agencies.

We seek to provide all students with opportunities to participate in the processes for their own musical education as part of the college curriculum and through extended curricular activities. We seek to provide appropriate progression routes in Music from KS3 via KS4 to KS5, enabling musically talented students to access further and higher education, and make careers in performing, artistic and creative areas of work, enabling every student to fulfil his/her musical potential.

All students have access to the many opportunities that are available through the diverse activities of the Music Department. All students are encouraged to become independent, responsible and reliable musicians. The materials used in curricular and extended curricular activities are drawn from a variety of sources; they are representative of the Western ‘classical’ tradition, folk and popular music, and cultures around the world. We seek to provide opportunities for our students to work with professional practitioners and to watch professionals at work. Both the Jerningham and Pepys sites are well equipped with two large classrooms on both sites and four and three practice rooms respectively. Both Jerningham site classrooms are equipped with keyboards and a full set of classroom percussion instruments On the Pepys site one classroom is fully equipped with Mac computers whilst the other contains a full set of PCs.
