At Knights Academy, our team of dedicated Science teachers work to ensure that our scholars are equipped with the knowledge to be succesful in everyday lives. The experience gained in Science will enhance their content knowledge and practical skills needed to be successful in their GCSEs and enable them to make the progress needed to marticulate to University and beyond.

 

Year 7

The Exploring Science course that commences in Year 7 has been designed to provided scholars with the best preparation for the new GCSE. This course builds the required skills in literacy, mathematics and practicals, following evidence-based approaches to the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy, and tackles barriers holding students back.

 

Year 7 content knowledge covers all three areas of science: Biology, Chemstry and Physics.

Units are as follows:

 

Biology Chemistry Physics
Cells, tissues, organs and systems Mixtures and separation Energy
Sexual reproduction in animals Acids and Alkalis Current electricity
Muscles and bones The particle model Forces
Ecosystems Atoms, elements and molecules Sound

Year 8

Years 9, 10 and 11

In Year 9, after a brief consolidation of KS3 units, students begin their GCSE course. At Knights Academy we follow the EDEXCEL course of study for Science GCSEs.

 

There are two options available to students at this level:

  1. Combined Science (equivalent to two GCSEs)
  2. Seperate Science (equivalent to three GCSEs)

Combined Science Qualification at a glance

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Combined Science consists of six externally examined papers. These are available at foundation tier and higher tier.

 

Biology Paper 1

  • Topic 4 – Natural selection and genetic modification
  • Topic 5 – Health, disease and the development of medicines.

Biology Paper 2

​Assessment overview

Students are given summative examinations every six (6) weeks to provide information about their progress and device appropriate intervention if needed.

A mixture of different question styles, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, calculations and extended open-response questions are used on summative papers. Calculators may be used in the examination.
