Learning Through the Experience at HAHC: A Summer of Success
The Headstart Programme is still going strong! The main aim is to give students a headstart and inform, motivate and support them with their career aspirations and management of those aspirations. This summer more than 80 students from Year 11 and 12 took part in an extensive volunteering, experience, work shadowing, HE taster programme managed by our Career Service.
Experiential Learning is a rellay important part of the KS4/KS5 experience at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College. The holiday program's purpose is to provide students with learning experiences which will enable students to discouver and develop confidence and gain an insight into a subject, job role or cause of interest in a real world setting.
Students were encouraged to explore intersts and career options, as well as learn about their responsibility within our community. Eighty four students participated in the Challenge NCS Holiday Programme, 130 Year 11 students participated in work experience placements at a range of work places including the GP Studio, the Borough of Southwark, Edmund Waller Primary School, NewXLearning, Herne Hill Pharmacy and many others. 102 Year 12 students participated in a range of work experiences from work experience at the Bank of England, Thomson Reuters, Dentsu Aegis, Iqvia and DWF Law. A further 80 students participated in Higher Education Engagements activities including Summer Schools, Taster Days and Open Day.
The feedback from employees and co-ordinators was very positive and their comments indicate that our students are valuable students and employees of the future. Through their experience, students learnt to be professional, self-directed and reflective and were able to develop their self-awareness, career management skills and inform their decision making. The combination of traditional classroom based learning and experiential learning created well-rounded students who are prepared for life after Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College.
